

Transforming Vacant Land into Community Power
Anton Seals, Jr., Lead Steward and Co-Founder of Grow Greater Englewood (GGE) in Chicagomand his team are turning a long-abandoned lot into a thriving community plaza, reconnecting residents with nature and local food systems. This project will serve as the entry point for the Englewood Nature Trail—a 1.75-mile green infrastructure project that promotes economic empowerment, food sovereignty, and environmental justice.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
L. Anton Seals Jr. is a South Shore, Chicago native, community organizer, entrepreneur, and educator. As the Lead Steward and Co-Founder of Grow Greater Englewood, he spearheads initiatives that transform vacant city lots into thriving farm businesses. With expertise in asset-based community development, social enterprise, and public policy, Anton is dedicated to fostering sustainable local food systems and equitable urban development.
Anton is a 2018 Next City Vanguard Fellow and a 2010 German Marshall Fellow. He serves as Chair of the Woods Fund of Chicago and sits on the National Board for the Trust for Public Land, along with several other boards in Chicago. Seals has advised and counseled organizers, activists, political and civic leaders, as well as corporate and philanthropic organizations, in advocating for a more racially just society.
