FEMA National Risk Index

The National Risk Index (NRI) by FEMA is a valuable resource that helps communities across the United States understand their risk to natural hazards. Through the NRI, users can explore an interactive map showcasing data for 18 natural hazards including floods, earthquakes, wildfires, and hurricanes. The NRI incorporates three main factors: Expected Annual Loss (EAL), Social Vulnerability, and Community Resilience. The EAL metric assesses potential losses due to natural hazards. Social Vulnerability considers aspects such as population demographics, housing, and economics that might affect a community’s ability to prepare for and respond to these hazards. Community Resilience evaluates how well a community can recover from disasters. The NRI is a crucial tool for policymakers, emergency managers, planners, and the public to make informed decisions, allocate resources, and build resilience against natural hazards.
