Social Vulnerability Index
The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) is a comprehensive database and mapping application developed by the CDC and ATSDR. It assesses social vulnerability based on 16 U.S. Census variables from the American Community Survey, grouped into four themes: socioeconomic status, household composition and disability, minority status and language, and housing and transportation. The SVI helps identify communities that may need support before, during, or after disasters, such as natural or human-caused hazards and disease outbreaks. By providing detailed maps and data, the SVI enables public health officials and local planners to better prepare for and respond to emergencies, ultimately aiming to decrease adverse effects among socially vulnerable populations.
